Father Awarded Joint Custody in Ingham County After an Unacceptable Recommendation

On Behalf of | Apr 6, 2017 | Case Results, Firm News, Legal System

Despite any parent’s obvious desire to put a child’s best interests first, domestic issues involving children can quickly become complicated or even contentious. In these delicate situations, it is best to contact a trusted attorney to look out for your best interests and protect your parental rights.

Recently, the father of a 2-year-old in Ingham County came to Lansing’s DeBruin Law after two previous attorneys were unable to reach a favorable resolution. Essentially, the parents participated in a conciliation and the conciliator sided with the mother in the case. The father objected to this result with a prior attorney and subsequently hired DeBruin Law. Attorney DeBruin represented him through the second and third days of the referee hearing. After the referee hearing, a recommendation was issued that would require this father to engage in counseling and drug testing, in order to receive basic parenting time. Dissatisfied with this outcome, attorney DeBruin promptly filed an objection to this recommendation.

This led to extensive negations with the opposing counsel and the judge, where eventually the original recommendation was vacated. In the end, and due in large part to the aggressive representation he received, the father was awarded joint legal and physical custody with equal parenting time without conditions.

The outcome of an individual case depends on a variety of factors unique to that case. Case results do not guarantee or predict a similar result in any similar or future case.
