29-Year-Old International Student Has Violent Charges Dismissed

On Behalf of | Dec 2, 2020 | Assault, Case Results, Firm News

A 29-year-old client of DeBruin Law PLLC was charged with felonious assault (a.k.a.assault with a dangerous weapon), which is a felony punishable by up to four years in prison, and domestic violence, which is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 93 days in jail. This client is not a U.S. Citizen, but is here legally obtaining a graduate degree. Any violent conviction would have caused problems with her ability to remain in the United States or return if she left.

From the time the client hired attorney Tiffany DeBruin, they started working on a proactive plan to address the issues that led to the incident. The client enrolled in counseling services and attorney DeBruin spoke to the prosecutor about the client’s future ambitions.

While the prosecutor was only originally willing to reduce the felony to aggravated assault, which is a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail, attorney DeBruin was able to convince the prosecutor to dismiss the charge altogether after the client successfully completed a batterers intervention program.

The outcome of an individual case depends on a variety of factors unique to that case. Case results do not guarantee or predict a similar result in any similar or future case.
